ROSEBURG, Ore. – City of Roseburg buildings will be closed Friday, July 4, in observance of the Fourth of July Independence Day holiday.

Roseburg City Hall, the Roseburg Public Safety Center, Roseburg Public Library and other City buildings will be closed to the public. The library also will be closed on Saturday, July 5.

However, you can still head over to Quintus Park, 344 W. Susan St., for a StoryWalk®, which can be viewed from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily through Saturday – including Friday, the Fourth of July. This week’s featured story: “Baby goes to Market” written by Atinuke and illustrated by Angela Brooksbank.

The July Fourth holiday offers a great opportunity to get out and enjoy Roseburg’s beautiful parks, which will all be open from dawn to dusk. Cool off at Fir Grove Park Splash Pad or venture over to Stewart Park to play sand volleyball or horseshoes or hike the Umpqua River Trail.

Most parks -- including Beulah, Eastwood, Parrott Creek, Quintus, Stewart and Sunshine -- have playgrounds. The Riverfront Disc Golf Course and Roseburg Skate Park near the Stewart Park Natural Area, aka the “duck pond,” will be open. Free concrete games including pingpong and cornhole are available at Eagles Park downtown, but players must bring their own equipment.

Free “Yoga in the Park” starts at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 5, east of the band shell in Stewart Park. Just a reminder that Stewart Park’s outdoor tennis and pickleball courts are closed for renovation, and the Umpqua Valley Tennis Center will be closed on Friday, July 4. Stewart Park Golf Course will be open 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, July 4.

Police and firefighters will continue to provide public safety throughout the holiday.

Lobbies at City Hall, 900 S.E. Douglas Ave., and the Public Safety Center, 700 S.E. Douglas Ave., are normally open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. Library hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

The holiday commemorates July 4, 1776, when the Continental Congress of the 13 American colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. Early celebrations included bonfires, concerts, parades, musket and cannon fire, and public readings of the Declaration of Independence.

The City and Roseburg Fire Department remind everyone to celebrate July Fourth safely and responsibly to keep our community and its residents safe.
